Homelessness is an issue nationwide, and while the issues are complex, I chose to focus on the invisibility of homeless people. There needs to be more recognition on both a personal and nationwide scale to help address this issue.
My concept for the ad on the left was for the hands and the sign to be in focus while everything else becomes unnoticed or invisible to showcase what people see versus who is really there. The ad on the right is a series to the ad on the left, showing the same person, faceless, on a bench.
Sketches
I started by sketching the figure in different positions attempting to land on one that feels defeated. Since I wasn’t including the face, I still wanted the figure to remain expressive and show the feeling of the figure.
Process
I decided to paint this piece as a way for the figure to feel unfinished to symbolize the stories of those who are homeless despite the narrative people create in their head. I painted the first ad using acrylic paint for the background, the hands, and the sign. For the figure, I used watercolor.
In my second piece, I began the process the same, painting the background and the bench. The image did not come out how I wanted it, so I touched the rest of it up on ProCreate.
